Take a listen to Episode 4: A Deep Dive into Payment, Founding and Funding with Tim Demetriou

Interested in finances, payments, and funding in the startup ecosystem? Episode 4 of our podcast is here and will tell you all about it!

Today in the Startups Start Here Podcast, Tim Demetriou, CEO of Pencil, a B2B SaaS company, and Trevor Townsend, CEO of Startupbootcamp Australia, discuss the valuable insights on how the pandemic dramatically shifted the dynamics of payment for wholesalers in Australia and the U.S.

Tim and Trevor open up about the need for prepayment versus offering payment terms and the astonishing reliance of the U.S banking system on checks for a significant 15% of their total payments.

Their conversation takes a deep dive into the inception of Pencil, a B2B SaaS company, and its mission to address the cash crunch due to delayed B2B payments. Pencil's innovative platform has transformed the industry by redefining credit and payment processes, fostering a shift towards upfront payments, and facilitating smoother operations for wholesalers and suppliers.

Tim and Trevor also discuss the challenges of customer acquisition and the pivotal 'magic moment' when discovering product-market fit. They delve into the significance of software integration for wholesalers and highlight Pencil's role in the ecosystem, focusing on automated reconciliation and the critical credit application process in customer onboarding.

One key message Tim shared was that startup funding isn’t easy. Tim and his business partner, Greg Armstrong experienced a lot of struggles when navigating the business landscape, including raising capital, maintaining transparent shareholder communication, and challenges with timing and investor alignment when engaging with venture capitalists. Thanks to the startup community, they were able to find the support they needed.
