The problem we're solving
Tropical seaweed is one of the world’s most abundant farmed biomasses, yet nearly all processing is limited to carrageenan. This locks farmers into a single market and blocks new bioeconomy uses. Global industries need sustainable biomass inputs, but lack reliable tropical supply. The missing infrastructure is systems that convert seaweed into new standardized ingredients beyond carrageenan, that can deliver at scale.
Our solution
AlgaTrop builds seaweed biorefineries that convert tropical seaweed into standardized ingredients beyond carrageenan. Our multi-stream processing platform transforms variable smallholder biomass into traceable inputs for agriculture, feed, and other bioeconomy industries. By processing seaweed near farming communities, we unlock new markets while stabilizing demand and income for coastal farmers.
Our differentiator
AlgaTrop’s differentiator is "MUZE", a multi-stream processing architecture designed specifically for tropical seaweed. Instead of producing a single product like carrageenan, MUZE converts one biomass input into multiple ingredient streams. This allows variable smallholder seaweed to be standardized, fully valorized, and supplied as traceable inputs to multiple bioeconomy industries.
Biggest achievement
We established a functioning pilot seaweed biorefinery in Zamboanga Del Sur, Philippines, validating a basic MUZE processing system and demonstrating diversified ingredient production from tropical seaweed. We have also secured a formal partnership with the Tawi-Tawi provincial government to support industrial scale-up in the province with 50% of national seaweed production, and achieved wide stakeholder buy-in for our vision for the island province.
