About Direct Kinetic Solutions
The problem we're solving:
Portable devices run out of power, they drain their batteries with standby, idle, or constant functions. These greatly reduces the useful life of the sensor, creates a design consideration as you need to create a battery big enough to support the idle cycles, and can lead to critical failure i.e. a GPS tracker dying six months into a 3 year mission in the Arctic.
Our solution:
We solve this by leveraging the unfair energy density advantage radioisotopes have when compared to materials traditionally used in chemical batteries. DKS deposits the isotope onto a semiconductor to capture its energy and make it usable. Our Persistent Power Sources capture this decades long energy generation and make it usable in a compact, safe, and convenient form factor that operates regardless of environmental conditions. DKS sources can be inserted onto the PCB of a device or be retrofitted. Our products reduce battery waste by minimizing the number of battery changes needed to fulfill a mission, generate savings by extending the time between charges in complex devices, and enable missions previously thought of as impossible.
Our differentiator
The difference lies in that we are installing a compact power plant on the device vs. relying entirely on a battery for the operation. By having an independent power source, we can design for it to trickle charge a battery, take care of the parasitic functions of the circuit without penalizing the primary battery, and/or even power a System-on-a-Chip to perform independent battery management functions.
Biggest achievement:
Our biggest achievement to date is the engagement with the United States Air Force. DKS was challenged to extend the life of existing GPS labels from 6 months to 20 years. We are now in the prototyping phase with the opportunity to develop and manufacture thousands of units by the end of next year. They will also match dollar per dollar any private investment up to $1.8 million dollars.
