Taking CO2 from Industrial emissions and turning it into food - Sara Howard, NovoNutrients

With Demo Day on the horizon, the Food Innovation cohort is preparing for the final stages of the program. October 13th is coming fast so the SBC team decided to head down to Tasmania to check in with their FoodTech entrepreneurs.

Our team met up with co-founder Sara Howard of NovoNutrients. Their company grows proprietary microbes adapted from nature, feeding them hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide from industry to produce carbon negative protein that could be used in a variety of applications. Using this process, NovoNutrients is essentially taking something that our planet has too much of- carbon dioxide, to produce something of high value that is becoming more and more necessary to feed our growing population - food.

NovoNutrient aims to be carbon negative with all the products they produce. In her interview, Sara reveals, “for every 2 tons of carbon dioxide that we prevent entering the atmosphere, we create 1 ton of protein.” Launching their product successfully will inevitably impact the environmental and food industry in multiple beneficial ways.

Currently, they are focusing on “fishmeal” feed where they are developing protein for seafood farming. Yet after talking with her SBC mentors, Sara realised that they should also explore use of this protein for animal feed, especially for cattle and also for use in various foods. As they research more, they aspire to take their products to new limits.

NovoNurtients is off to a great start and will soon be ready to expand their product line. Interested in seeing the NovoNutrients team pitch their final product?
