Helping hotels better manage food waste - Charlotte Aschim, TotalCtrl

With Demo Day on the horizon, the Food Innovation cohort is preparing for the final stages of the program. October 13th is coming fast so the SBC team decided to head down to Tasmania to check in with their FoodTech entrepreneurs.

Charlotte Aschim is the CEO of the Norwegian startup TotalCtrl, a food waste prevention software company geared towards making positive changes in the hotel industry. They help customers track their food from farm to fork and prevent food waste from happening. TotalCtrl also helps connect the relationship between the chefs and the hotel managers. For example, instead of using pen and paper to remember information, chefs can use TotalCtrl’s software to share their kitchen operations data with their hotel managers. From there, chefs are able to gain control on their food inventory and get back to what they love to do - cook!

Time, money, and food are the most important metrics to TotalCtrl. In the interview below, Charlotte shared, “with our solution, our customers have seen a 35% reduction in food waste in one month- which is pretty fast and big.” As TotalCtrl scales, they are able to help customers save food and decrease their amount of waste ending up in landfills, which is a step in the right direction.

Throughout the program TotalCtrl, a Nordic based business, has learnt the importance of the Australian market and how to enter it. Charlotte used the past few months with SBC to learn from industry experts on how their food waste product can fit against others and make a difference. While they need to create more awareness and education on the traceability side, they are ready to look into the regulations and introduce their food waste technology in Australia.
